Through its work, the firm of Tinmouth Chang Architects strives to continue exploring ideas of how architecture can be realized. Based on the principle that every project’s unique starting points leads to a unique solution, projects are crafted that are a combination of the firm’s design vision with the particular project’s character. Following this process, projects are created through simple moves set within a logical framework, which is elaborated through innovative use of natural materials, simplicity of detailing and sensitive integration of architecture and landscape. Sustainability and durability are seamlessly woven into the design approach, all resulting in a design that not only rests easily in its site but has a simple directness and ease of use.

Founded in 2003 as a small design studio, its principals John Tinmouth and Tom Chang work by bringing small and highly skilled teams to a project, with each team member contributing a depth of design and technical knowledge. The firm’s process involves continually engaging the clients in discussions mediated by a series well-developed design options, uncovering unexpected opportunities and responsive design solutions. With the principals deeply involved at every stage through to the end of construction, a continuity of vision and an efficiency of process are achieved.

Going forward, Tinmouth Chang will continue to strive to create interesting spaces for different scales, uses and places, responsive to clients’ unique needs and characters.
